Charity, Pt. 17

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not: charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

I Corinthians 13:4-7

In looking at this passage dealing with characteristics of charity, we have come to the fact that charity “…rejoiceth in the truth.”  The first part of that phrase is “Rejoiceth not in iniquity…”  Charity doesn’t rejoice in sin and it does rejoice in the truth.  Those are two opposite things and they are two things that we get backward all too often.  They are opposite things that are mutually exclusive, that is, they cannot happen at the same time.  If we rejoice in iniquity, we can’t be rejoicing in the truth.  If we rejoice in the truth, we cannot rejoice in iniquity.

The question is this – what are we rejoicing in today?  Where is our pleasure?  What do we enjoy?  What do we seek after?  What do we allow into our lives?

Charity knows the answer to all of those questions.  Charity rejoices in the truth and avoids sin in all forms.  What is the truth that we should be rejoicing in?  Philippians 4 gives us a good list describing things about which we should be thinking.  We need to filter all of our thinking through the Word of God.  We need to allow the Bible to guide us in our thinking.  And the Bible will always guide us in the right path.  It will never lead us astray and I will never lead us to sin.

What are we rejoicing in today?  Sin or truth?  If we have charity, we will rejoice in the truth!
