The Profit of Many

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink; or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.  Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeing mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

I Corinthians 10:31-33

We as Christians need to take a good, long look at the last verse in this passage.  “Even as I please all men in all things, not seeing mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.”  There is a lot of truth and wisdom in those words.

The world tells us to live for ourselves.  “If it feels good, do it.”  The world and the flesh tell us to put our own happiness above all else.  But that is not the way the Bible and the Lord would have us to do things.

We are told here to put our profit in the back of our minds, and put the profit of others in the front.  Sometimes there are things that we might want to do, but they are not right.  Sometimes there are things that we might want to do, but they are not going to help anyone.  We need to make sure that we are living our lives for the “profit of many” and not just our own profit.

The reason we do this is “that they may be saved.”  We have a higher purpose in our lives.  We have something greater than “what feels good at the moment.”  We have the salvation of the souls of others on the line.  It is important.  It is a worthy cause, to give ourselves to the Lord first and others second.  Are we doing it?
