Which Way Will We Go?

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.  For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

Romans 6:19-20

The way our lives are lived comes down simply to the question of who and what are we going to serve and follow.  All of us are going to serve someone and something.  The only question for us is “who are we going to serve?”

Before we came to the Lord and became Christians, we served sin.  We served it in the form of serving ourselves, serving the world and serving the Devil.  That is what we did and that is what we were.

Now that we have come to the Lord and we are Christians, we can, as the Bible tells us in this passage, “yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”  Now, we can serve the Lord.  We can, instead of serving sin, serve righteousness.  When we were the “servants of sin,” we were “free from righteousness.”  We had no choice.  We were the servants of sin.  Now we are freed from that.

The simple question that these verses (and this entire chapter) ask is this – who are we going to serve.  The chapter gives us this question in several different ways and uses several different examples to drive the point home.  But the question remains.  Who are we going to serve?  Every day we have to ask ourselves that question.  Every day we have to live out that question.  No matter what we say, our lives will show who we serve and who we follow?  What do our lives show today?
