God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (Christmas Hymn)

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Traditional English Christmas Carol

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas day;
To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;
O tidings of comfort and joy.

In Bethlehem, in Israel, this blessed Babe was born,
And laid within a manger upon this blessed morn;
The which His mother Mary did nothing take to scorn.

From God our heavenly Father a blessed angel came;
And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same;
How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name.

“Fear not, then,” said the angel, “Let nothing you afright
This day is born a Savior of a virgin pure and bright,
To free all those who trust in Him from Satan’s power and might.”

Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas all others doth deface.

I had not heard some of these verses before, but they are good ones.  We can today rest because of Jesus.  The whole Christmas story is one great story of “tidings of comfort and joy.”  Those two words just might sum up the spirit of Christmas best: comfort and joy.  Comfort that we can rest in Him and joy that a Saviour has come to Earth to save us from our sins.  What a glorious celebration!
