The Bread of Life

Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.  The Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.  Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

John 6:31-34

As we saw yesterday, the manna that the Israelites ate in the wilderness was simply physical bread, meant to satisfy their physical hunger.  But Jesus was bringing them so much more than just a full belly.  (This exchange took place after He had fed the 5,000 with the 5 loaves and 2 fish)  He had fed them physically, and now He wanted to feed them spiritually.

He told them in verse 33 that the true “bread of God” is “he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”  The true bread of God from Heaven was in the form of a man.  The true bread of God was not just manna on the ground for them to eat.  It was a perfect Saviour Who would give them life.  That would be the true bread from God out of Heaven.  Jesus was that bread.

He came exactly to give life unto the world.  That was the whole reason for His coming.  John 10:10 tells us “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”  He was the true Bread from God out of Heaven.  Many of the people recognized that and accepted Him as such.  They were hungry for that Bread: “Lord, evermore give us this bread.”

They didn’t fully comprehend the nature of this Bread.  But they knew that they wanted it and they knew that they would only be able to get it from Jesus.  It is the same all these years later.  Any person who would accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour needs to want Him first.  He is the Bread of Life, given to all those who will take Him!
