They Testify of Me

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.  And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

John 5:39-40

When Jesus spoke to the people, He spoke of Himself and of the salvation that they could find in Him.  In these verses, He told them to “search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”  The people were a religious people who read and respected the Bible, and did what they could to obey it.  But they missed one very key part of the Bible: the part about Jesus.

All throughout the Old Testament, there were pictures of Jesus and prophecies that He would come.  These people had read about those pictures and prophecies and likely knew them by heart.  But when they were confronted with the subject of those pictures and prophecies, they rejected Him.  “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”  They decided that they wanted to hold onto the pictures and prophecies instead of accepting Jesus as Who He said He was.

There are many people today who do a similar thing.  They consider themselves to be “spiritual people.”  They claim to read the Bible and try to follow its teachings.  They say they believe the Bible.  But, for whatever reason, they fall short of believing on Jesus Christ.  They “…will not come to me, that (they) might have life.”

We do not want to be among those people.  We want to come to Him.  We want to come to the Life-giver that we might have life.  If we search the Scriptures with an open heart, we will see Jesus on just about every page.  It all points to Him.  Let us come to Him, cling to Him, and follow Him every day!
