The Gospel

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  And ye are witnesses of these things.

Luke 24:45-48

When Jesus opened the understand of the disciples, there were a few key things He told them.  “… it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in him name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”  What He told them is basically what we now call “the Gospel.”

Jesus suffered, died, was buried, rose from the dead the third day.  That is the essence of the gospel.

He then talked to them about the reason for the gospel: “…repentance and remission of sins.”  Those things were the things that were going to be “preached in his name among all nations.”  They were going to start at Jerusalem, and spread to all the nations of the Earth.  It has come to my nation and it has come to my heart.  The reason for the death, burial and resurrection is so that we might have remission of sins.  Through the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ on the cross, we can have our sins forgiven.

As Jesus told the disciples, “And ye are witnesses of these things.”  Jesus told the disciples about the gospel and He told them that they were witnesses “of these things.”  If we have seen these things, we also are witnesses of them.  The same gospel that Jesus spoke of to the disciples is the gospel that saved us.  The same commission He gave the disciples, He gave it to us too.  We have an incredible responsibility.  How are we fulfilling it?
