For the Beauty of the Earth (Hymn)

For the Beauty of the Earth
Folliot Pierpoint (1864)

For the beauty of the earth
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.

Refrain

Lord of all, to Thee we raise,
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light.

Refrain

For the joy of ear and eye,
For the heart and mind’s delight,
For the mystic harmony
Linking sense to sound and sight.

Refrain

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild.

Refrain

For Thy Church, that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Her pure sacrifice of love.

Refrain

For the martyrs’ crown of light,
For Thy prophets’ eagle eye,
For Thy bold confessors’ might,
For the lips of infancy.

Refrain

For Thy virgins’ robes of snow,
For Thy maiden mother mild,
For Thyself, with hearts aglow,
Jesu, Victim undefiled.

Refrain

For each perfect gift of Thine,
To our race so freely given,
Graces human and divine,
Flowers of earth and buds of Heaven.

Refrain

I have heard quite a few verses to this hymn.  I don’t know that these are all of them that there are, but they give us a good picture of things for which we should praise Him.  I think that the entire hymn could be summed up by the words of the refrain: “Lord of all, to Thee we raise,  This our hymn of grateful praise.”   We should offer Him our “hymn of greatful praise” all the time.  It’s no wonder there are so many verses to this song.  I’m sure that we could add more and more as we think of all the things for which we should be offering Him our “grateful praise.”

  1. Thanks, Ben

I’ve never heard this one before. (Puts me in the mind of ‘All things bright and beautiful’. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this great “Hymn of grateful praise”. It’s beautiful.

    Blessings,
    ann

P.S. Theresa posted a song once and we each had the opportunity to write a verse. It’s interesting how the creativity He deposited in us blossomed 🙂 !

    • That sounds really cool. I will have to look for it. I wrote a couple of songs a while back and my sister is currently writing the music for them. I don’t know if they will amount to anything or not, but it was fun. 🙂
