Day By Day (Hymn)

Day By Day
Lina Sandell Berg (1832-1903)

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He Whose Name is Counselor and Power;
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
Ever to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.

Lina Sandell Berg was known as the “Fanny Crosby of Sweden” for her prolific hymn writing.  While I am not familiar with most of her work, this is a great one.  I love the thoughts contained in this hymn about keeping a simple faith that helps us through each day.  There are so many good lines that you could dwell on, but I will mention one: “Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.”  Sometimes fear creeps in, but when we trust His “wise bestowment,” we really have no reason to fear!

  1. I loved that, the Fanny Crosby of Sweden. 🙂 Oh to be that prolific at writing anything for Him! 🙂 Thanks, Ben, for another great hymn about Him.

    • That would be great- to be prolific at doing anything for Him. Last night, we sang a new hymn that was written by a man I know. That would be amazing- to write a hymn and then hear it sung in praise to the Lamb!

    New and beautiful and very relevant to my current state of mind 😉
    “He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
    Gives unto each day what He deems best—”

    God bless you for being His reminder to me today!

    Blessings,

    P.S. I feel like you have a sneak peak into what I’m posting tomorrow 🙂

    • Nice! Inside information! 🙂 I like how He “mingles toil with peace and rest.” He wants us to work hard, but He knows when we can’t handle any more. He is so good!
