Wonderful Grace of Jesus (Hymn)

Wonderful Grace of Jesus
Haldor Lillenas (1917?)

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Greater than all my sin;
How shall my tongue describe it,
Where shall its praise begin?
Taking away my burden,
Setting my spirit free;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Refrain

Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Wonderful grace, all sufficient for me, for even me.
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame,
O magnify the precious Name of Jesus.
Praise His Name!

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching to all the lost,
By it I have been pardoned,
Saved to the uttermost,
Chains have been torn asunder,
Giving me liberty;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching the most defiled,
By its transforming power,
Making him God’s dear child,
Purchasing peace and heaven,
For all eternity;
And the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

If I started listing all of the parts of this hymn that I love and that are an encouragement to me, I would basically just be repeating the entire thing.  But you can read as well as I can, so I will let you read and enjoy this wonderful hymn for yourself.  I will mention one part that I especially enjoy: a grace that is “Broader than the scope of my transgressions; greater far than all my sin and shame” really is a “wonderful grace of Jesus!”  Wow, that’s powerful!

  1. I am laughing, because when I got to the “broader than the scope of my transgressions” part I thought that I would just have to comment on that. Then when I read further I saw that you did! 🙂 It has been so long since I have heard that song.

    They used to sing it a lot at a church I attended many years ago. At that time the meaning of so many of the words just escaped me. Thank you so much for posting it!

    • Hi, Theresa! You know what they say- great minds think alike. Or something like that. 🙂 There are so many songs that I’ve sung for years that I’ve never really stopped to think about. That’s part of the reason I’ve been posting a few- I think it helps to think about the meaning when you are just reading the words. “Broader than the scope of my transgressions” is such a great thought!

  2. I’m with you and Theresa! ha! That part did stand out within an outstanding hymn. I also liked the wonderful grace, all sufficient for me, for even me. So often I see things for others, see how much He loves them, is doing for them . . .but forget to acknowledge that He is doing the same for me . . .even me! Thank you , Ben!

    • Hi Deb- there must be something good about grace that’s greater than our sin! That’s a good point about seeing His grace in others but sometimes not seeing it in ourselves. He is such a gracious God!
