The Haven of Rest (Hymn)

The Haven of Rest
Henry Lake Gilmore

  1. My soul in sad exile was out on life’s sea,
    So burdened with sin and distressed,
    Till I heard a sweet voice, saying, “Make Me your choice”;
    And I entered the “Haven of Rest”!

    • Refrain:
      I’ve anchored my soul in the “Haven of Rest,”
      I’ll sail the wide seas no more;
      The tempest may sweep over wild, stormy, deep,
      In Jesus I’m safe evermore.
  2. I yielded myself to His tender embrace,
    In faith taking hold of the Word,
    My fetters fell off, and I anchored my soul;
    The “Haven of Rest” is my Lord.
  3. The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole,
    Has been the old story so blest,
    Of Jesus, who’ll save whosoever will have
    A home in the “Haven of Rest.”
  4. How precious the thought that we all may recline,
    Like John, the beloved so blest,
    On Jesus’ strong arm, where no tempest can harm,
    Secure in the “Haven of Rest.”
  5. Oh, come to the Savior, He patiently waits
    To save by His power divine;
    Come, anchor your soul in the “Haven of Rest,”
    And say, “My Beloved is mine.”

I love the image of our Saviour as a “Haven of Rest”.  There are so many burdens that people bear and so many times people struggle so hard to figure everything out for themselves.  Jesus is our Haven of Rest.  And I love the line in the chorus “In Jesus, I’m safe evermore”.

  1. Yay! I love your hymn days! 🙂 This is just beautiful. It plays like a movie in my mind: wild seas, stormy skies and then the safety and anchor of Jesus not allowing us to be moved anymore. I think I liked the line most about Him saying, “Make Me your choice”. That is always the right choice for me. God bless you, Ben!

    • Thanks, Deb! It is great imagery, isn’t it? I like the thought “O come to the Saviour, He patiently waits.” And I like the thought about Jesus being our anchor in the storms of life. OK, so I just like the whole song!

  2. Ben, I am not familiar with this hymn, but I am so glad you shared it. I love the fourth verse about reclining like John “the beloved so blest.” I will have to try to find a recording of this so I will know the tune as well as the words. Peace, Linda

    • Hi Linda- you should find a recording, it really is a great hymn. We sing it in church every now and then, but I don’t think our hymnal has that fourth verse in it- and like you, I liked that verse when I saw it. I’ll have to look into that. Anyway, I’m sure there is something on youtube to give you the tune.
