There is Forgiveness

If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?  But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

Psalm 130: 3-4

Who shall stand?  That is a very good question in light of the first part of the verse- “if thou, Lord shouldest mark iniquities”.  If the Lord were to “mark iniquities”, who would be able to stand?  Not me.  Definitely not me.  He would have destroyed me long ago.  Of course the answer is that no one would be able to stand.  If there were no forgiveness for sins, we would all be doomed.  Every last one of us.  It is a frightening thought that the Lord knows all of our iniquities.  He knows all of our vile sin.  He has seen everything we have done and thought and has heard everything we have ever said, both to others and to ourselves.  That thought alone should drive us to Him for mercy.

But the wonderful thought of these verses is found in verse 4, “But there is forgiveness with thee…”.  I can’t help but think of the end of Micah 7:19 “…thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”.  If the Lord were to “mark iniquities”, there would be no cause for hope- no reason to even live.  But, thank the Lord, there is forgiveness with Him.  I like the way the song says it- “Let me at Thy throne of mercy, find a sweet relief”.  The Lord is good.

  1. Very nice reminder. I might have mentioned this before, but I love the Psalms.
