Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.
Psalm 108:13
We have no power or strength outside of the Lord. As humans, we are naturally weak and feeble. We can’t do anything apart from God. But this verse says we can “do valiantly” through Him. According to Webster, valiant means “possessing or acting with bravery or boldness”. Those are not normal characteristics of people. It takes a special power to proclaim the name of the Lord with boldness. It takes a special power to be a witness and an example for the Lord. That power to “do valiantly” comes only from the Lord. Here is what stands out about this verse to me:
1. We can “do valiantly”.
What could be more valiant than to do what the Lord wants us to do? What could be better than living for Him? In our own flesh, we can never do right. In our own power, we can do nothing. But, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”. Jesus Christ and only Jesus Christ can help us do the things that we need to do.
2. There is a reason we can “do valiantly”.
We can live our Christian lives boldly and with courage because of what it says in the second half of the verse: “it is he that shall tread down our enemies”. God has already won the victory. “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” -I Corinthians 15:57. How can we not live boldly when the victory has already been won for us? How often do we live cowardly Christian lives in defeat when all we have to do is claim the promise and enjoy the victory He has won for us?
Let us live our lives in Christ boldly and let us allow Him to help us to “do valiantly”!

The verse I thought of when I read this was 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” It is through His Holy Spirit that we can boldly proclaim His name.

Sometimes it’s hard to proclaim His name boldly, but He has definitely given us the power we need to do so.
