Lord, I’m Coming Home (Hymn)

Lord, I’m Coming Home
William Kirkpatrick (1892)

I’ve wandered far away from God,
Now I’m coming home;
The paths of sin too long I’ve trod,
Lord, I’m coming home.

Refrain
Coming home, coming home,
Nevermore to roam,
Open wide Thine arms of love,
Lord, I’m coming home.

I’ve wasted many precious years,
Now I’m coming home;
I now repent with bitter tears,
Lord, I’m coming home.

Refrain

My soul is sick, my heart is sore,
Now I’m coming home;
My strength renew, my hope restore,
Lord, I’m coming home.

Refrain

My only hope, my only plea,
Now I’m coming home;
That Jesus died, and died for me.
Lord, I’m coming home.

Refrain

I need His cleansing blood, I know,
Now I’m coming home;
O wash me whiter than the snow,
Lord, I’m coming home.

Refrain

In my opinion, this is the best hymn that there is on the subject of returning to the Lord from sin.  This song is the story of the Prodigal son in Luke.  It is the story of many other prodigal sons throughout history the world over.  It might even be our story.  Wherever we find ourselves today, we can always come home to the Lord.  What a wonderful truth.

Look and Live (Hymn)

Look and Live
William Ogden

I’ve a message from the Lord, Hallelujah!
This message unto you I’ll give,
‘Tis recorded in His Word, Hallelujah!
It is only that you look and live.

Chorus
Look and live, my brother, live,
Look to Jesus now, and live;
‘Tis recorded in His Word, Hallelujah!
It is only that you look and live.

I’ve a message full of love, Hallelujah!
A message, O my friend, for you,
‘Tis a message from above, Hallelujah!
Jesus said it, and I know ’tis true.

Chorus

Life is offered unto you, Hallelujah!
Eternal life thy soul shall have,
If you’ll only look to Him, Hallelujah!
Look to Jesus Who alone can save.

Chorus

I will tell you how I came, Hallelujah!
To Jesus when He made me whole-
‘Twas believing on His name, Hallelujah!
I trusted and He saved my soul.

Chorus

What a great message and a great truth!  This is how we get to the Lord.  This is how we find salvation: we “look and live.”  It’s a wonderful message that we need to be sharing with all those who need it.  “Life is offered unto you, If you’ll only look to Him.”  What a wonderful truth from a wonderful Saviour!

Living for Jesus (Hymn)

Living for Jesus
Thomas Obadiah Chisholm

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.

Chorus
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me.
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne.
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.

Living for Jesus, Who died in my place,
Bearing on Calvary my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call,
Follow His leading and give Him my all.

Chorus

Living for Jesus, wherever I am,
Doing each duty in His holy Name;
Willing to suffer affliction and loss,
Deeming each trial a part of my cross.

Chorus

Living for Jesus through earth’s little while,
My dearest treasure, the light of His smile;
Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem,
Bringing the weary to find rest in Him.

Chorus

This hymn is what life is all about: living for Jesus.  There are so many reasons that, as Christians, we should be living for Jesus and this song gives us several of them: “Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me.”  That is one huge reason for us to live for Him.  He “died in my place, bearing on Calvary my sin and disgrace” is another big one.  We know we should be living for Jesus.  Now, are we?

Living By Faith (Hymn)

Living By Faith
James Wells (1918)

I care not today what the morrow may bring,
If shadow or sunshine or rain,
The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything,
And all of my worry is vain.

Chorus
Living by faith in Jesus above,
Trusting, confiding in His great love;
From all harm safe, in His sheltering arm,
I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.

Though tempests may blow and the storm clouds arise,
Obscuring the brightness of life,
I’m never alarmed at the overcast skies-
The Master looks on at the strife.

Chorus

I know that He safely will carry me through,
No matter what evils betide;
Why should I then care though the tempest may blow,
If Jesus walks close to my side.

Chorus

Our Lord will return for His loved ones some day,
Our troubles will then all be o’er;
The Master so gently will lead us away,
Beyond that blest heavenly shore.

Chorus

This is a great hymn to remind us that we do need to live by faith.  In fact, as Christians, everything we do should be in faith.  Sometimes things get obscured and darkened and we find our faith starting to weaken and waiver.  It is during those time we can take comfort in the words of this hymn: “I’m never alarmed at the overcast skies, The Master looks on at the strife.”  Are we living by faith today?

Lily of the Valley (Hymn)

Lily of the Valley
William Charles Fry

I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.

Chorus
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart and now He keeps me by His power.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

Chorus

He will never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
From His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory, to see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.

Chorus

When I was younger, I always thought that this was a fun one to sing.  Now that I am not as “younger,” I can see the message of the song.  I can now understand the message that the Saviour will never leave me nor forsake me.  I can understand the message that He is always there to help and comfort me.  It’s a great hymn with a great message, but I still think it’s fun to sing!

Like a River Glorious (Hymn)

Like a River Glorious
Frances Havergal (1876)

Like a river glorious, is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth, fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth, deeper all the way.

Chorus
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.

Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry, touch the spirit there.

Chorus

Every joy or trial, falleth from above
Traced upon our dial, by the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully, all for us to do.
They who trust Him wholly, find Him wholly true.

Chorus

This is another one of my favorite hymns.  We rarely find true peace in this world, but there is one place that we most certainly can find it: near the Lord.  If we are “stayed upon Jehovah,” our hearts truly are blessed and we do truly find “perfect peace and rest.”  His peace is “like a river glorious.”

Let’s Talk About Jesus (Hymn)

Let’s Talk About Jesus
Herbert Buffum

Let’s talk about Jesus, the King of kings is He,
The Lord of lords supreme, through out eternity.
The Great I Am, the Way, the Truth, the Life, the Door.
Let’s talk about Jesus more and more!

I don’t know if there is more to this song than this little chorus, but even if there isn’t, it’s a great little chorus – especially for Easter Sunday.  To me, it’s one of those songs that just gets into your head and you can’t help humming it all throughout the day.  If there is one thing that would be good to be reminded of all throughout the day, it would be to talk about Jesus more and more.  Yes, let’s talk about Jesus more and more.  On Easter, we usually do talk about Jesus, but we should be talking about Him every day!

Let Him Have His Way With Thee (Hymn)

Let Him Have His Way With Thee
Cyrus Nusbaum

Would you live for Jesus, and be always pure and good?
Would you walk with Him within the narrow road?
Would you have Him bear your burden, carry all your load?
Let Him have His way with thee.

Chorus
His power can make you what you ought to be;
His blood can cleanse your heart and make you free;
His love can fill your soul, and you will see.
‘Twas best for Him to have His way with thee.

Would you have Him make you free, and follow at His call?
Would you know the peace that comes by giving all?
Would you have Him save you, so that you can never fall?
Let Him have His way with thee.

Chorus

Would you in His kingdom find a place of constant rest?
Would you prove Him true in providential test?
Would you in His service labor always at your best?
Let Him have His way with thee.

Chorus

This is a great hymn that reminds us how to have a successful life: let Him do what He wants to do with you.  His blood cleanses our hearts and makes us free.  His love fills our souls.  His power is what helps us to do what we ought to do.  We need to just let Him do His will in us and through us.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms (Hymn)

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Elisha Hoffman (1887)

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Chorus:
Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Chorus

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Chorus

I truly is a joy, honour and privilege to lean on the everlasting arms every day of our lives.  It is “sweet to walk in this pilgrim way” because we can depend on Him.  And we do have no reason to fear or dread and we can have peace because we can lean on the everlasting arms of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Kneel At The Cross (Hymn)

Kneel at the Cross
Charles E. Moody

Kneel at the cross,
Christ will meet you there,
Come while he waits for you;
List to His voice,
Leave with Him you care
And begin life anew.

Chorus:
Kneel at the cross,
Leave every care.
Kneel at the cross,
Jesus will meet you there.

Kneel at the cross,
There is room for all
Who would His glory share;
Bliss there awaits,
Harm can ne’er befall
Those who are anchored there.

Chorus

Kneel at the cross,
Give your idols up,
Look unto realms above;
Turn not away
To life’s sparkling cup;
Trust only in His love.

Chorus

The beauty of this hymn is found in its simplicity.  “Kneel at the cross, Christ will meet you there.”  That is a very simple, yet very powerful statement.  No matter where we find ourselves in life, that is the answer: kneel at the cross.  Come to Jesus, “Leave with Him your care, and begin life anew.”  That is exactly what we are to be doing, no matter our situation!
